- Back Stepping
Technique used to descend steps that is easier on the knees.
Sometimes used when the knees are injured or irritated.
Plant one foot sideways at the edge of a step with the instep close to the edge, then turn and step down and back with the other foot.
Another form of back stepping is just to turn around and walk backwards downhill. Anyway, back stepping is some form of going backwards to save your knees.
