- Cant Hook
Cant hooks and peaveys are tools that afford leverage for moving or rotating logs.
To roll a heavy log, use a series of short bits with the hook and maintain your progress by quickly resetting it. Catch the log with the hook hanging on top of the log.
Rotate the log using the leverage of the handle, working the tool like a ratchet.
Moving large logs may require several hooks working together.
Obviously, then, a "cant hook" is also known as a "peavey". In use, you hook one into a log and then swing the handle through an arc, which explains the Welsh word "cant" (the bordering of a circle, an iron tire, an edge), and how it got associated with trail building tools. Or maybe not. Who can say?
